A packaging firm in Belper is thanking its employees and supporters after raising more than £12,000 for local and national charities.

During the first two weeks of September a hardy group of managing directors from Derby Road firm DS Smith Packaging took on the challenge of cycling from one end of the UK to the other, taking in different DS Smith Packaging sites along the way and helping to set off a host of local fundraising locally.

This week, the firm announced they had hit their national fundraising target of £100,000 which will be split between Heart Research UK and Cancer Research UK, as well as a donation to local charities.

The sponsored cycle started in Livingston, Scotland, moving South to take in Clay Cross, Featherstone, Belper, Louth, Fordham, Ely,
Blunham, Bristol, and Devizes with the finish line at Launceston, Cornwall, a total of 905 miles.

The bike ride passed through Belper on September 9 and in support of MD David Richardson, employees from DS Smith took part in a Match My Mileage Challenge where two static bikes were set up at Belper for individuals to ride in half hour segments, to match the mileage completed each day by David.

Employees also organised a raffle with suppliers and customers donating some great prizes including weekend breaks and an HD TV. David Richardson, managing director for DS Smith Packaging in Belper said: “It has really been a testament to the kind of people we have here that we had such great support for the fundraising effort.”
