A HAPPY Belper couple who met for the first time in Scotland after months of being penpals have celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Catherine and Desmond Holden, of Crich Lane, had friends in common and got to know each other when writing letters in 1950.
The pair, now both 80, met up and were married the following year on August 14. They moved down to Belper, where Desmond was born, the very same evening.
The couple had three sons – Daniel, 55, Donald, 48, and Darren, 39 – and three daughters – Elizabeth, Hazel and Patricia, 46. Elizabeth died aged 56 and Hazel at 33. The pair also have 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
