The winner of the 2014 Belper Short Play Competition will be flying in to see his work performed as part of Belper Arts Festival.

John Doble learnt of his win on January 1 and within days he and his wife had booked flights and trains to be in Belper to see ‘A Serious Person’ come to life.

A resident of New York, John Doble and his wife Elizabeth will arrive in Belper on Thursday (May 22), see his play performed on the Friday before flying back to the USA at lunchtime on Saturday.

“I’m thrilled to be coming over and see my play in England. We’re only sorry we can’t stay longer,” said John.

George Gunby, Chair of Belper Arts Festival, said “It’s remarkable. John and Elizabeth are coming at their own expense and we will make them very welcome.”

A Serious Person is a two hander set in a New York Coffee Shop and features the Belper Players duo of Vanessa McCauley and Nick Mothershaw.

Also on the bill are rehearsed readings of Light One Up by Ashbourne writer, director and actress Jane Wilton as well as a monologue featuring the brilliant Maggie Burns as “Madge at the Funeral”.

The performances take place on Friday, May 23 from 7.30pm at Number 28, Market Place, Belper. It is a “pay what you can afford” event.
