The last meeting of Pentrich WI was held on Tuesday, February 14, and was an open meeting.
Our presidents took pleasure in welcoming all members and their guests. Our speaker was Austin Globe, a former police officer and dog handler. Despite some wishful thinking that he had been invited to some sort of world record breaking Valentine’s Day date, Austin soon got into the swing of the theme for the evening, and gave a fascinating insight into his 30-year career with the police force. Austin spent his years as an officer working alongside his canine companions, including those trained to search for explosives. Each of his dogs lived with Austin in the family home for the duration of their working lives, until retirement and beyond. From mishaps in pet food warehouses, to near misses with royalty, Austin provided a talk full of fun and interesting facts.
The business meeting followed. A raffle was held, and presidents Julie Waterfall and Doreen Staton presented a lovely bouquet to Marjorie Harwood, in celebration of a special birthday. The social side of WI membership was clearly demonstrated by the wealth of invitations on offer from other institutes to various parties and functions.
A trip to our very own Denman College is to be held later in the year, and our choir is proving to be a fun, friendly and successful addition to our WI. From tours of Pride Park Stadium to country walks and book clubs, there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming year.
Our next meeting will be held at Pentrich Village Hall on Tuesday March 13.
Our sales table will be ‘books’ and our guest speaker will be Mrs Angie Cooper. Mrs Cooper will tell us about her transition in career from school teacher to proprietor of The Pudding Club in Ashbourne. We have been promised samples of her delicious cakes, so please come along.
New members are welcome so please come along to our meetings, or get in touch with our Presidents, Julie Waterfall 01773 540350 or Doreen Staton 01773 603877.
