Popular art event to return to Belper

THE excited organisers of the second-ever Open Houses art event in Belper want to make it world famous.

Sheila Guyatt and Viv Scott want to emulate the success of a similar exhibition event that has been held in Brighton for years.

Open houses debuted in Belper last May with 27 artists displaying their work in 13 venues, 11 of which were houses.

Such was the success of that event, Sheila and Viv are running it again — on June 2, 3 and 4 — and they already have more than 40 artists and at least 20 venues.

Sheila, who moved to Belper from Brighton three-and-a-half years ago, said: “I am very excited and overwhelmed.

“We never dreamed it would get this big.

“Thirty-five years ago it started in Brighton and it’s world famous now. We want it to be just as big in Belper.”

The event sees artists display their work for sale in numerous houses around Belper.

Sheila and Viv will be among those opening their doors again this year, with artist Sheila displaying her own work, like she did last time.

There will be paintings, drawings, textiles, sculptures, pottery, ceramics and photographs, among other things.

“It was such a great success last year and everyone wanted us back,” said Sheila.

“We had fantastic feedback. It was unbelievable.

“People were saying please do it again because it was just what Belper needs.”

The Belper News will publish a full list of all the venues nearer the time.
