Residents are being warned to look out for bogus callers posing as road maintenance contractors, working for the Derbyshire County Council.
A number of complaints have been made about men claiming to be from a company employed to repaint the roads.
The rogue traders have targeted residents and businesses in Duffield and Ashbourne. They have even shown a fake letter from the council claiming to give them permission.
Simon Spencer, deputy leader of Derbyshire County Council, said: “This is not genuine and people should not hand over any money to these con men.”
