School meals prices rise

DERBYSHIRE parents will be hit in the pocket after council chiefs decided to increase the price of school meals.

From September 5, primary school meals will rise by 5p to £1.90 a day while secondary school meals will cost £2 – up 10p.

The authority says the “small” increases – the first in two years – are necessary as a result of soaring costs, leading to budget pressures of approximately £334,000.

And the council is to stop receiving funding from the Government’s ring-fenced School Lunch Grant, reducing income by a further £1.1m.

It said more children were choosing to eat school meals than at any time in the past five years.
