Scout leader jailed over ‘depraved’ child porn photos

An ex- Scout leader has been jailed for 18 weeks for having “disgusting and depraved” sex images of children.

They were found after Derrick Lodge, 54, sent his computer to a shop for repairs and staff alerted police, a court was told.

Jobless Lodge of Old Mill Close, Duffield, admitted having indecent images of children on January 9 when he appeared at Derby Magistrates’ Court.

District Judge Joanne Alderson told him: “The fact that you have been involved in the Scouting movement for 30 years gives me cause for concern.

“At that very time you were in a position of trust with children in the Scouting movement, you were viewing these disgusting and depraved images.

“These are offences of the most serious type, involving children being exploited. Every time anybody looks or you look at those pictures again, those children are exploited over and over again.”

Of the 33 indecent pictures, police found four which “involved sexual activity and penetration of children,” the judge added.

Since his arrest, Lodge had left the Scouting movement and also Duffield Carnival Committee.

Lynne Manning, prosecuting, said police also found pictures of “Scouting excursions” on the computer but these were innocent.

She said: “Police confirmed there was nothing indecent and there was no individual picked out. They were merely children with adults and nothing of concern.”

Lodge told police he had received “numerous pop-ups” on his computer when he went onto chat rooms and viewed adult porn. He said the child images must have been provided by “a third party”.

Stacey Whyte, mitigating, described the former engineer as a “recluse” who cares for his elderly mother and other relatives.

She said:”He leads a fairly secluded lifestyle.” she said he cared for his moth and for an aunt and uncle.

“He was integrated into the community and this is something he will not be able to do and will become more of a recluse.”

She said Lodge immediately pleaded guilty and co-operated with the probation service. He admitted to police that nobody else used the computer.

Lodge was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years. The judge also ordered destruction of the computer and images.
