Second album for Mark Lilley
HOLBROOK born songwriter Mark Lilley recently released his long awaited second album.
'Picture Without a Frame' is the follow up to his first album 'Opening Titles' and if you enjoyed the eclectic mix of pop and folk in the first release you're sure to love this second collection.
Mark is a former pupil of Kilburn Junior School and John Flamsteed Community School and worked as a sound engineer at Ripley's Meadow Farm Recording Studio before getting into some serious recording of his own.
A meeting with another Holbrook folk legend John Tams set Lilley on the folk path, a style of music that he says gives him a "perfect platform to learn performing in front of a regular captive audience."
Picture Without a Frame offers a mixture of dark numbers, drawing on Mark's traumatic experience of losing his father and a friend's battle with eating disorders, to uplifting love songs.
Track ten on the album 'Pen to Paper' is a real highlight that cannot help but improve your mood and get your foot tapping. Mark's vocals and guitar work are joined in this number by Sallyann Hallsworth in a catchy duet.
While some of the lyrics are a little cringe worthy – "It's only writers block, to be continued dot dot dot" for example – it is overall a very good listen, ideal to play while relaxing with a glass of wine at the end of a long hard day.
Lilley has in the past written a song commissioned by Denby Parish Council for John Flamsteed School to commemorate the unveiling of the revolving star map monument and heritage centre.
