Preparations are already underway for Belper’s entry into the East Midlands in Bloom competition this Summer.

Organisers were able to celebrate last September when Belper was awarded best large town in the contest and went on to win the same category at Britain in Bloom – run by the Royal Horticultural Society –the following month.

The accolade was the result of 25 years’ hard work by volunteers in the town and saw beauty spots like the River Gardens and Memorial Gardens filled with impressive blooms.

Now, organisers are appealing for people to help back the bid for this year’s contest.

John Nelson, the chairman of Belper in Bloom, was among six representatives from Belper who went to the national awards ceremony, in St Peter Port, Guernsey, and received the honours from TV presenter Matt Baker in October.

He said: “It doesn’t happen overnight - we need people to come forward and sponsor flower beds and hanging baskets now.

“Belper has gone from an inert place you drove through to somewhere that people stop and think ‘what a blooming beautiful place’ in the last few years.”
