Swim event for charity

Madam,

With reference to photo “Hand Over” Memory Lane Issue dated 21 March 2012.

This photo, taken in the late 1980’s, is of the presentation of shields by the British Heart Foundation to the people who raised the most money at the sponsored swim for that particular year. The people photographed from left to right are Audrey Clutterbuck (Belper Branch of British Heart Foundation), Paul Helm (Manager of The Royal Bank of Scotland), Donna Chadwick (me, recipient of one of the shields) Jack Oldrini (Belper Branch of British Heart Foundation), Hazel Moss (Belper Branch of British Heart Foundation), but unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the gentleman who received the second shield.

As a child I was encouraged by my parents to participate in the annual sponsored swim following the death of my beloved Grandad, who had suffered from heart disease for a number of years. That first year I wasn’t a particularly strong swimmer and completed 12 lengths on my back just kicking my legs. The following year I did the swim with a bit more style after joining Belper Marlin Swimming Club, and continued to do the annual swim for several years to come.

When I started work at The Royal Bank of Scotland, my wonderful manager Paul Helm kindly agreed that I could put a notice up about the swim and ask our regular customers if they would like to sponsor me. This also became an annual occurance and it even got to the stage where the customers used to ask me when the next swim was, so they could hand over their money! With their fantastic support and that of my friends and family I became a regular recipient of “The shield”.

As fate would have it the Heart Foundation have come to play a very important role in our families lives again as in 2006 my Dad received a quadruple bypass, and in 2011 a replacement valve. We have often spoken of the advances in medicine since my Grandad was poorly, and are hugely grateful that my Dad has been able to benefit from these advances….. So the recent appearance of this photo has presented me with the opportunity to say a huge thankyou not only to the British Heart Foundation, but also to those many customers and friends at RBS Belper who year after year dug deep into their pockets, to support both me and this wonderful organisation.
