A SPATE of thefts from cars on Belper’s Whitemoor estate and in Duffield has prompted a police warning.

In the past two months there have been 16 thefts from vehicles – with mobile phones, keys, wallets, clothing and footwear all being stolen. Police say 11 of those thefts were due to people leaving their cars unlocked.

Sgt Richard Booth, who runs Safer Neighbourhood policing in Belper, said: “We are urging the public to secure their property at all times. This includes vehicles, sheds, outbuildings and homes.

“In the warmer weather windows and doors are often left open, providing a perfect target for the opportunist thief. Also ensure that all valuables are removed from vehicles or left out of sight.”
