Winners of the British High Street competition flocked to Belper from across the UK to see what the town had to offer after it beat 130 national entries to be crowned ‘Winner of Winners.’
Delegates representing ten winning towns were welcomed to Belper from as far as West Lothian in Scotland and Colwyn Bay in Wales for a special ceremony at The Lion Hotel on Friday 13th March.
The winners discussed ideas and updates on projects they have been developing in their towns, with industry leaders and a Westminster representative also on hand to share expert knowledge.
Stephen Jackson. Regeneration and Growth manager at Amber Valley Council, said that the council were ‘delighted to be hosting the event.
He said: “This event is a great opportunity for the winners of the Great British High Street competition to share their learning and ideas on developing town centres.”
“We are delighted to be hosting the event in Amber Valley since it gives us a chance to show case the work that has been happening Belper.”
“We have also been able to invite delegates from the other towns in Amber Valley to allow the benefits and learning from this conference to be used in all Amber Valley’s town centres .”
Belper was chosen to host the event after being crowned the winner of the ‘Market Town’ category and scooping the ultimate ‘Winner of Winners’ award last year.
The judges, who visited in October 2014, were taken on a whistle-stop tour to see what makes Belper so special and friendly. They were particularly impressed with the scale of involvement and collaboration from the community and local businesses.
