A van thief has been jailed after the vehicle’s owner and police pursued him through parts of Derbyshire.

Theo Andrews was arrested after stealing a van from a driveway in Belper and driving off in it, eventually abandoning it in Middleton and running away.

The van owner was chatting to his father outside his house in Broom Close on the evening of April 10, 2014 when Andrews walked onto the driveway and took the van.

The victim and his father quickly followed in a car, calling the police and remaining with the van as it drove off toward Middleton.

It stopped in Chapel Lane and Andrews ran off. Officers called the police helicopter to the scene and Andrews was tracked from the air and arrested by police on the ground.

The 25-year-old, of Ferry Street, Burton, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking and was jailed for 13 months.

He was also banned from driving for two-and-a-half years.

He was sentenced at Derby Crow Court on Friday, June 24.
