A headteacher is celebrating after winning a wedding package worth more than £6,000 at the popular venue where her daughter is getting married.

Headteacher Sue Walker, 51, entered a competition to win a wedding at Belper’s Shottle Hall as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

Sue and her partner Anthony Davies entered the competition during an open day where they were invited to explain in no more than 200 words why they deserved to win.

Sue said: “I wanted to show Anthony where Grace’s wedding reception was going to be and when I was invited to enter the competition I thought, ‘why not?’

“I have never won anything so I simply couldn’t believe it – it really is an absolute dream come true for us both.

“I was at work when I found out and I was completely overwhelmed - I was jumping around my office when I put the phone down.”

Sue’s daughter, Grace Walker, is holding her wedding celebrations at Shottle Hall in August next year.

Now Sue and Anthony, of Heage, have decided to tie the knot in August 12 months later.

The couple, who met at a salsa class, got engaged after Anthony went down on one knee in front of the Bellagio Fountains, Las Vegas.

“I want Grace’s day to be completely special,” said Sue.

“Which is why we are going to wait until the year after, but we have already started talking about both our dresses.

“It’s going to be exciting planning our weddings together, although they are not likely to be that similar.”

Shottle Hall events manager Sarah Davis said: “By the end of this year we will have held 1,000 weddings, yet no two have been the same.”
