Workshops for adults with learning disabilities

A BAR in Belper has teamed up with an arts organisation from the town to run workshops for adults with learning disabilities.

Now, Hacketts bar and Fleet Arts are looking for friendly people with creative skills to come and help run the arts sessions.

Hacketts runs a monthly social event for adults with learning disabilities.

The workshops will be held at Fleet Arts’ base on The Fleet, Belper.

Volunteers will take part in a training programme which will include how to work with groups and individuals.

JP Deacon, who runs the social nights at Hacketts, said: “We are looking for adults who have a genuine interest in getting to know people of all abilities and ages and who would be able to work as a team.

“Previous experience in this area could be a help, but is not a necessity.”

Starting with introductory taster sessions, the volunteer helpers will work alongside experience arts workers from Fleet Arts in running six workshops with social nightmembers.

Volunteers will learn techniques and ideas for workshops or gain experience and confidence of passing on existing skills or interests to a small group. Workshops will be in pottery, mosaics, drumming, silk painting, making decorative frames and making mobiles. The workshop programme has been based on requests from social night members at Hacketts events.
