SEVERAL Belper hockey players were part of the Derbyshire Under-17s girls hockey team which one better than last year's team when won the recent national tournament in Surrey.
In a very tight competition, Derbyshire held their nerve in the regional competition at King Edward School in Birmingham and won the tournament on penalty flicks in the final against Staffordshire.
From this tournament Derbyshire became the repres
entative of the Midlands region at the national finals in Surrey which took place a fortnight ago.
The team emphatically won the national tournament in Haslemere, Surrey, scoring 21 goals and conceding just two in four games.
On the Saturday they beat West Yorkshire 7-0 and Devon 2-1 before recording wins of 5-0 over Oxford and 6-1 against Cambridge in their last match.
This is the first time Derbyshire have won this age group going one better than last year's team who came second.
Derbyshire U13's and U14's also won each of their regional tournaments at Coventry and Warwickshire respectively.
The U15 played a difficult torunament and were unfortunately knocked out of their event in the semi-finals by the eventual winners Leicestershire.
Each of these squads contained Belper players who played a vital part in their teams successes.
