SHINING Cliff Wood overlooking the River Derwent was last Sunday's venue for Derwent Valley's major orienteering event of the year.
Restricted to just 500 competitors because of severe impositions set by English Nature the organisers were concerned that a reduced field of competitors may have put off entrants.
There was no need to worry however, such was the quality of the ori
enteering on offer that a complete sell-out was ensured.
The courses, which were well planned by John Duckworth from nearby Crich Carr, were divided up into five-year age classes with an open course and women’s open course. There were also junior classes available.
The winner of Open course was Marcus Pinker from the Sheffield University Orienteering Club and the winner of the Women’s Open course was Sadie Burrow from the Royal Air Force Orienteering Club.
