BELPER MEADOWS 1st XI 221-7 (19pts)

drew with

AMBERGATE 1st XI 155-8 (8pts)

IN the first of two local derbies over last weekend, Belper batted first on a sultry day in May down at Christchurch Meadow. last Saturday.

The innings again got off to a poor start with Mike Cox (0) not troubling the scorers.

Saikat Sarkar (19) and Peter Jenkins (92) started to repair the damage before at the fall of Sarkar’s wicket with the score on 47-2, Shahid Mohammed (71) came out to bat against his former club.

The diminutive stroke player needed no greater incentive to come out and play a blazing innings and typically smashed the ball to all parts in a third wicket stand of 136 which swung the match in Belper’s favour.

All the plaudits must go to ‘Mr Consistent’ Peter Jenkins (92) who produce as good an innings as he has played for the club.

He has an inane ability to wait for the bad ball to hit and always seems to sell his wicket for a high price whenever he comes in at his cherished number three position.

A final score of 217-7 was scored off 44 overs as Peter Brooks declared to give his bowlers two extra overs to bowl Ambergate out.

This almost immediately backfired as S Shuttleworth (33) and A Layton (73) put on 75 for the opening wicket at a good rate. However, with a steady fall of wickets from that point, Ambergate made every effort to bat through the overs and get as close to the Meadows score.

The only Meadows bowler to create any real inroads to the batting was the express pace of Asaad Ali (4-36), though it was a fine fielding performance highlighted by a fine run out from Michael Cox, Ambergate managed to get to the 48th over conclusion with two wickets intact at 155-8.

BELPER MEADOWS 2nd XI 111 all out (3pts)

lost to

CROMFORD MEADOWS 1st XI 114-5 (22pts)

MEADOWS seconds lost the toss on a minefield down at Cromford Meadow last Saturday.

Wickets fell steadily and at 70 -9 it looked like the young Meadows side would surrender without putting up a fight.

Only Chris Maleham (26) showed any fortitude in his batting until the two old stagers Les Hunt (10) and Andy Spendlove (25 not out) put on 41 for the last wicket, Spendlove in particular playing some expansive shots in the vein of Adam Gilchrist.
