Belper clinch league title on the last day

BELPER RFC first XV crowned a memorable season as they clinched the Midlands 4 East (North) division title on the last day of the season after recording a sixth straight victory with a 47-20 win at Tupton.

Title rivals Nottingham Boots Corsairs went down 28-27 at East Retford and despite still having one game to play, Belper cannot be caught at the head of the table.

The black and whites got off to a flying start in north Derbyshire with a Ross Gray try in the first minute converted by Simon Jones who went on to kick six in total.

Gray went over again after five minutes, Jones again applying the finishing touches before Merv Holmes added a third try after 15 minutes.

Tony England and Mike Gunter both went over and had their tries converted on 30 and 35 minutes respectively.

Further tries came from Bryan O’Gorman on 50 and 60 minutes, Jones kicking both to round off a magnificent season.
