Derbyshire County League Division Two
Belper Meadows (5pts) 108 all out (G Cresswell 3-26, I Burgoyne 3-23) lost to Denby 2nds (27pts) 217-8 (S Payne 38) by 109 runs
After the heartbreak of their last game and the rain last weekend, Meadows entertained Denby 2nds, looking to get to winning ways.
Denby won the toss and elected to bat, starting positively with A. Bria (24) and Ross Perry-Taylor (20) against the new ball before Wozniczka-Wells (2-63) trapped Bria LBW.
At the other end, Rob Borland (2-39) bowled with swing and a even a touch of pace as he reeled off 14 overs straight through, claiming the wickets of J. Simms (20) and L. Glenn (8). With the score at 103-4, the game seemed well poised but the brothers Payne worked the ball well with Mark (22) and Stephen (38) adding 50 for the fifth wicket before D. Challinor (2-61) made the breakthrough.
Some quick running towards the end pushed Denby’s total up to 217-8, M. Wheatcroft claiming 1-16, leaving the Belper boys thinking they could do this over tea.
Denby though had other ideas as they claimed wickets at regular intervals throughout the Belper innings with only three batsmen reaching double figures in a terrible display of batting on a good wicket.
G. Cresswell (3-26) and I. Burgoyne (3-23) did the damage to decimate the Meadows top order.
Despite some resistance towards the end, Belper were eventually bowled out for 108 in the 43rd over, which, on the whole, was an embarrassing end to a game that really should not have been lost.
This weekend, Meadows travel to Aston-on-Trent, where everyone will need to up their game and prove their worth to the side as every point is becoming precious in the fight to avoid relegation.
