THE sound of leather on willow returns to the area this weekend as our local cricket teams embark on their first matches in the eagerly-awaited 2011 Derbyshire County League season.

The clubs have been hard at work during the winter months, carrying out work on their grounds, organising net sessions and, in recent weeks, taking part in pre-season friendlies and generally getting in shape for this all-important weekend, when the preparations finally come to an end and the serious business of playing cricket begins once more.

In Division One of the Derbyshire County League, Denby entertain Marehay while Ambergate are at home to Aston on Trent in a Division Two encounter.

In the same division, Belper Meadows welcome Derby Congs and Denby 2nds are at Shipley Hall.

A little further down the leagues, Belper Amateurs visit Denby 2nds and Ambergate 2nds make the short trip to take on Matlock 2nds. Both of these games are in Division 5N.
