Denby CC continue to climb

Denby first team won a fourth league game in five to continue to climb the Derbyshire Premier League table.

While the performance as a whole was somewhat patchy it does illustrate how the team has progressed during the course of the season.

Their opponents were Dunstall who, after being put into bat, got away to a great start courtesy of some wayward seam bowling and solid batting from Tom Mandleburg and Jamie Benstead who was their top scorer with 58.

They were well set at 110 for 1 at the half way stage when the Denby spinners Pete Burgoyne and Joe Greenhalgh got to work.

In partnership they reeled off 30 overs returning identical figures of 2 for 42.

John Jennings and Andy Malkin hit out at the end to raise the total to 209 for 5 although this was some way below what looked likely at one stage.

As in recent weeks Denby approached the target in positive fashion as Alex Eyre and Lottie Sesele put on 60 for the first wicket. When they went, Sunil Bhatt (29) and Pete Burgoyne (35) kept up the good work but when they were parted a flurry of wickets fell to leave the innings on 165 for 6 and the match evenly poised.

At that point Michael Mitchell and Dan Burgoyne came together and took their side to victory. Burgoyne completed the game with a six to finish on 36 not out while Mitchell provided solid support at the other end in a 50-run partnership.

Karl Turner nearly changed the course of the match with 4 for 41 but in the end it was not quite enough.

The 22 points lifted them up to sixth place with Lullington visiting the Copper Yard on Saturday for a 12.30pm start.
