Denby Cricket Club players continued preparations for the season with a friendly fixture at Cuckney Cricket Club.
To the knowledge of all at Denby, this was the earliest date the club had played a fixture and while conditions were not pleasant, there is no doubt that at some point during the summer the players will have to endure much worse.
Denby batted first in the 40-overs-a-side game and reached a creditable 180-8. Peter Burgoyne top scored with a well-made half century while Alexander Eyre, in his first game for the club, made 30, and Greg Cork kept the scoreboard ticking towards the end of the innings as he contributed an unbeaten 34.
On a slow pitch and long outfield, this was a challenging score and so it proved. Cuckney were never able to progress quickly against some accurate bowling and good fielding as the wickets were shared around and some good catches taken. Joe Greenhalgh picked up 4-43 and 15-year-old Rob Peat will also be pleased with the wickets he took.
Peter Burgoyne kept a lid on the runrate with his off spin and there were good spells from Ed Lowe and Greg Cork.
All in all, this was a good run out against a Cuckney team who, while not at full strength, finished in the top half off the Notts Premier League last season.
This weekend sees the first games at Denby with Staveley Welfare the visitors for a friendly match on Saturday and Aston Hall visiting the Copper Yard on Sunday for a Division Two fixture in the Mansfield & District Sunday League. Both games are scheduled to start at 1pm.
During the off-season, the club has carried out an impressive amount of maintenance work including the decoration of the clubhouse. Members old and new are welcome to come along and have a look over the weekend.
On Monday, April 16, from 6.30pm, the junior section is holding its registration evening for the 2012 season. Existing players are welcome to come along and re-register while the club has playing and training opportunities for new members aged eight and upwards.
