Peter Burgoyne’s terrific all-round performance was not quite enough to earn Denby1sts a Derbyshire Premier League victory.

Burgoyne struck eight and three sixes in a fine 82 from 102 balls.

He then grabbed two wickets as Denby tried to bowl out Ockbrooke and Borrowash to force their third win of the season, but they were thwarted by the ninth-wicket pair.

Burgoyne rescued Denby from 33 for three with some big-hitting and measured stroke play.

He added 121 for the fourth wicket with Fida Hussain, who hit five boundaries in his 46.

A rapid 33 off 28 balls by Shalika Karunanayake then boosted the total further as they made 241 for nine from their 50 overs.

Simon Mann and Joseph Wilson also took two wickets for Denby as they made regular in-roads into the Ockbrooke reply.

However, Alexander Eyre’s 94 provided stubborn resistance as the run-chase ended on 189 for eight.

In Division Three of the Derbyshire County League, Denby 2nds fell six runs short of a first win of the season in six attempts as they chased Heanor Town’s 220.

Joey Severn took four for 68 and then Steven Payne, 60, G. Wilson, 31, and R. Cherry, 32, took them to the brink of victory.

In Division 5 North, Denby were one wicket from a win and seven runs from a defeat.

Denby compiled 191 for eight with opener Mitchell Wagstaff hitting 63. Paul Kay took three for 35 in the reply as Duffield finished on 185 for nine.
