Derbyshire County Cricket League
Burton Glass Division 2
Tutbury (22pts) 188-4 [31.5 overs] (D Green 48, P Edwards 41, D Yeomans 31, M Wheatcroft 3-46) beat Belper Meadows (6pts) 185-8 [46 overs] (M Cox 36, J Slater 46, D Yeomans 3-44) by six wickets
BELPER Meadows fell to a first defeat of the 2011 season as a much-changed side went down at high-flying Tutbury who now lead the table.
The visitors arrived with a side containing many new faces to first team cricket mainly due to injuries sustained during a midweek Butterley Cup exit at the hands of Heanor Town CC.
However, the Belper innings got off to a fine start with captain Michael Cox (36) and Joe Slater (46) putting on 77 for the first wicket before Cox was stumped off the bowling of D Yeomans who finished with 3-44.
A flutter of wickets followed and the Meadows innings was in danger of collapsing at 115-5.
This was averted as Pete Brookes (19), Ash Spendlove (26) and Ben Gowing (16 not out) all chipped in to set a competitive if not challenging final score of 185-8.
After an early breakthrough from Matt Wheatcroft (3-46) who snared veteran batsman Rob Ellerington (0), the Tutbury batsmen tucked into the Belper bowling.
Sizeable contributions came from D green (48), D Yeomans (31) and skipper Paul Edwards (41) which meant that Tutbury were always well ahead of the scoring rate as each batsman scored at around a run-a-ball and the victory target was reached in just 31.5 overs.
Tutbury gave the young Belper side a good barometer of life in division two and showed the way with bat and ball, rightly deserving their place at the head of the division.
This Saturday, Meadows first XI are at home to Ambergate in what should be a fiercely competitive local derby.
