Former Chesterfield FC trainee Karl Payne collapsed and died on Sunday while taking part in a chari bike ride in North Wales.
The 44-year-old from Burton on Trent fell ill on the 110-mile Dougie Mac ride for Douglas Macmillan Hospice.
He was a trainee with the Spireites from 1989 to 1991 before going on to play for the likes of Burton Albion, Gresley, Belper Town and Mickleover Sports.
Mr Payne was also a player-coach with Rocester FC.
Temporary superintendent Nick Evans, of North Wales Police, said: “Members of the public and the emergency services tried their very best to help the cyclist and I am very sad to say that their efforts were not successful.”
