Home tie is the reward

FA Vase, second round

Stewart and Lloyds 0

Holbrook Sports 2

HOLBROOK Sports have been handed a home tie against Staffordshire-based Norton United in the third round of the FA Vase, a nice reward for this smash and grab victory.

For the tie in Northamptonshire, Sports were without the unavailable Emeka Ejiofor but had Simon Lillie back and new signing Darren Ruston on the bench.

Stewart and Lloyds kicked off down the slope and almost got there rewards within 30 seconds, a free-kick was whipped into the near post and the header just flashed wide.

Lillie had to save sharply early on with his feet after a shot from the six yard box went through a defender’s legs.

Holbrook had a chance too with Vaughn Hallsworth having his opportunity smothered away by the onrushing home keeper.

Hallsworth didn’t miss his next chance on 25 minutes though as he smashed Holbrook ahead to finish great work by Niall Mather.

Further chances came and went at either end with both keepers in good form.

Stewart and Lloyds came out the stronger in the second half and had Holbrook under the cosh for a lot of the game.

However, Sports emerged to double their lead on the hour. Substitute Ruston’s first touch for the club saw him flick his header into the path of Tom Bartram who outpaced the home defence to slot home for 2-0.

The game changed again on 70 minutes when Holbrook’s Paul Campbell was given a second yellow for kicking the ball away.

Stewart and Lloyds bombarded the Holbrook goal for the last 20 minutes but Holbrook’s defence and particularly Simon Lillie held firm and saw out the seven minutes of injury time to fully justify the victory.
