Belper Town under 18s clinched the league title by beating Borrowash Vics 3-2 at Christchurch Meadow, the same team that had beaten them in the cup final a week earlier.
A win for either side would have given them the league title but Belper put that recent cup heartache behind them to secure the league honours.
Many of the Belper side are now playing for the reserves on a Saturday and the side has found it difficult on a Sunday to consistently play to its usual high standards. However, they were back to their best for this match.
The first half saw Belper playing excellent passing football stimulated by the excellent Sam Dockwray in midfield. New strike pairing Matt Harris and Sam Vickers were a constant threat, supported by wide players Ryan Baker and Ryan Wheatcroft.
Ben Horsley was on form, breaking up Vics’ play and when they did get through, the defence with Ashley Worthington coming in at centre back were solid. Belper took the lead after 15 minutes with an excellent strike from Sam Vickers.
A succession of good saves and goalline clearances denied Belper a second until an excellent move taking in the length of the pitch was finished with a Matt Harris header.
The second half saw a change in fortunes with Vic scoring twice in a good spell and keeper Ryan Hopkins making some good saves.
The game was stretched and Belper hit back with substitutes Ross Kusik, Mitch Shore and Clayton Brown providing new energy. They were rewarded when Sam Vickers scored his second goal.
This has been a great achievement for the side, sponsored by Derwent Street Dental Practice, and their fourth league title in a row.
