Belper United made a magnificent start to their league fixtures at new home Christchurch Meadow by hammering Holbrook St Michaels 7-0 on Wednesday night.
Manager Steve Watson welcomed back Shaun Smith to the forward line with Joe Wheeler moving to the right. Ben Summers passed a late fitness test and started centre of midfield.
Holbrook started the game very brightly and were looking to spoil the Belper United party. After only five minutes, a shot crashed against the United post and Dan Sharp and Jordan McRobie were looking to be a constant thorn in the defence’s side.
However, on 17 minutes. a brilliant individual goal from Luke Crosby, who ghosted past five players, saw him score the opener. For the second game running, this seemed to calm the Belper United nerves, and they then looked like they could score with every attack.
On 38 minutes, Belper United finally got their second, when great work from Luke Crosby again led to an easy finish for Joe Wheeler.
The second half started the same way as the first ended. 48 minutes in and Belper United were awarded a penalty and the reliable Kyle Wadsworth stepped up to convert from the spot.
Belper United then started to run riot. Ben Summers scored from distance to make at four, another Ben Summers shot wasn’t held by the keeper and Shaun Smith nipped in to score the fifth, Smith got his brace after a mazy run into the box to make it six and Joe Wheeler added the seventh to get his second brace in as many games.
Steve Watson said: “ We started slowly but once we got the first, we were excellent. It’s a great start to our tenancy at Christchurch Meadow but we won’t be getting carried away. It’s still very early in the season. We may have scored seven but I am more pleased with a second clean sheet if I’m honest.
Tomorrow (Saturday), United are at Blidworth MW and then they host Pinxton on Wednesday (7.45pm).
