Holbrook Sports Reserves 1

Belper eased into the next round of the league cup as they comfortably dispatched Holbrook Sports at Christchurch Meadow.

Holbrook started well but it was the Nailers who opened the scoring on 18 minutes when Blake Owen bundled home from close range.

Belper had further chances to extend their lead and Owen nearly claimed a second when his long range shot crashed against the bar. Although the Nailers were dominant, they went into the break with a slender advantage.

Sports came out in the second half and pushed for an equaliser, but a goal from Owen from a magnificent ball by Matt Crooks, who had replaced the injured Luke Bailey, and a well-worked goal finished by Sam Vickers put Belper firmly in command. Holbrook reduced the arrears when Danny Arnold scored at the far post, which sparked them into life and they had a good 15-minute spell of possession.

Belper regained control and Tom Hayes scored two goals, with Owen turning provider for one. Confidence grew in the Nailers’ ranks and they played some sublime football with some particularly nice touches shown by Ashley Worthington.

Belper team: Meehan, Crossly, Holland, Wilson (Curtis 78), Bailey (Crooks 67), Worthington, Dallison (Bradley 82), Baker, Owen, Hayes, Vickers, unused sub Smith (GK)
