Runs for Brookes and co but Meadows make a losing start

B elper Meadows 1sts began their season in Division 5N on Saturday with a defeat against Darley Abbey.

After last season’s league and cup double, Belper were hoping for a winning start but it was not to be as they lost to their visitors by four wickets.

Belper Meadows batted first and compiled what looked to be a competitive total of 187-9.

Peter Brookes top scored with 46 while Mark Jones chipped in with 31, and Rob Marshall, who has joined after sterling service with Ambergate, scored 29.

But Darley Abbey were equal to the challenge and got home for the loss of six wickets, to take 22 points from the game, as opposed to B elper’s seven.

Belper Amateurs 1sts were also promoted to Division 5N but were without a game on Saturday.

There was better news for Belper Meadows in Division 8N where the seconds hammered Awsworth by 176 runs.

In the same division, Belper Amateurs 2nds opened their campaign by drawing against Denby 4ths.

This Saturday, Belper Meadows are away to Eckington in Division 5N while Belper Amateurs host Denby 3rds.
