A vital top-of-the-table match between the two top teams in the Derby Taverners Sunday Football League Intermediate League One.

Prior to the match, Belper Tavern Rovers were top by one point but opponents Allestree Vintage had two games in hand.

As expected, this was a very competitive game with the ‘Badgers’ having the best of the first half but it was goalless at the break.

In the second half, Allestree were by far the more attacking force, and the home side was indebted to keeper Craig Chapman, who twice pushed goalbound efforts on to the woodwork.

This proved to be vital, as with seven minutes remaining, Mike Smith outpaced the Allestree defence and lobbed the stranded Allestree goalkeeper to score the only goal of the game and claim the two points that will take the championship right down to the final games.

The other results in that division were:

Abbey Court 0 Seven Stars 2

New Bridge 2 Travellers Rest 1

Vine 8 Cueball 3
