Thorpe nets the winner as Belper win in cup final

Belper United Reserves came out on top in the final of the President’s Cup with a 2-1 win over Bilborough Pelican Reserves.

After a goalless first half Belper United conceded early in the second half.

A mix-up in the Belper defence saw the Bilborough Pelican forward go through and he scored to take the lead.

But the lead didn’t last very long though as Belper United went on the attack and within ten minutes of going behind, they equalised from a Dean Salt goal after great build-up play from the team.

Bilborough Pelican were visibly stunned,Belper United upped their game and within five minutes Adam Thorpe scored the winner after a mix up between two defenders and the Bilborough keeper.

Bilborough Pelican attacked for the final 15 minutes, but it was to no avail as Mark Rathbone, the Belper United keeper, pulled off two outstanding saves to make sure his team won the cup.

After the game, a jubilant Darren Mayes said: “Well done last night, we showed great desire and character to come back.

“If we can get a good result on Saturday we could all but tie up the league and double as well.”
