Belper United will be hopeful of making their debut in the Phoenix Trophies Floodlit Cup South tonight (Wednesday), weather permitting.
They face a trip to Derby-based side Mickleover Royals, with the game at the Raygar Stadium due to kick off at 7.30pm.
Both sides have been without a game for a while with Mickleover Royals yet to play this year and Belper United’s only game so far being on January 4, which resulted in an excellent 4-1 away win in the league Cup against CML North side Easington United.
The two teams are yet to meet this season with both games, home and away, being called off due to a waterlogged pitch. In the league, Belper United currently sit in sixth place with an eight-point advantage over Mickleover Royals. who are in ninth place, but Royals have played two games less.
Last year, honours were even between the two sides with both recording home victories, Mickleover Royals winning the first match 2-0 but United got revenge with a 4-0 win late in the season with goals from Luke Crosby(two), Adam Nicholls and Shaun Smith.
Manager Steve Watson said: “The clashes were close encounters last season and we expect the same on Wednesday. We are now on a run of five wins out of six in all competitions so are confident that if we can continue that form we are hopeful of getting a positive result.”
On Saturday, they will be looking to play their first league fixture of the year against top-of-the-table Bulwell at Christchurch Meadow.
In the corresponding away fixture, Bulwell came out deserved winners 4-2. Goals from Conor Carter, Marek Vipond and Scott Litchfield (two) were enough to beat United, for whom Sam Vickers scored a brace.
