Reflecting on what proved to a very long but successful season for the club, first team manager Steve Watson said: “It’s has been a fabulous season for Belper United 1st Team in only its second season in the Central Midlands League South.
“We only lost six matches but crucially we could not beat the top two sides Sutton Town or Pinxton, otherwise, we may have improved on our third place spot. We also got to the semi-final of the league cup, only to be beaten with the last kick of the match by Central Midlands League North side AFC Mansfield.
“In the league run-in we managed to only lose one from the final 12 games which put the top two under supreme pressure.
“Just before that run, we signed striker Shaun Smith who banged in 17 goals in 15 matches. Who knows what could of happened if he started the season with us.
“However, it has been a great team effort by all of the players involved and they should all be commended for there efforts for the club.
“On the management side, this season, I have been ably assisted by Belper United stalwart Paul Postlethwaite.
“In the new year, Phill Alcock joined us from Holbrook Sports to become goalkeeping coach, which helped us keep a 40 per cent clean sheet record from that point onwards.”
He added: “Also this year has been a hugely successful year for our reserves side, ran by Darren Mayes and Mark Bailey. They managed to achieve a historic League and Cup Double, so congratulations to everyone involved there.
“Going forward to the 2013/14 season, we have the excitement of groundsharing on Belper Town’s ground. Playing at a venue like that should help us keep and recruit the players needed to help us get promoted into the Step Six East Midlands Counties League, which is our major objective at moment.
“And as an added bonus this year we have entered the FA Vase for the first time in our history which will be very exciting times indeed for the club.”
