Ambergate pick up three precious points

Midlands Regional Alliance

Division Two

Ambergate 2

Wirksworth Ivanhoe 1

AMBERGATE FC recorded a first league win in three games to pick up a vital three points which keeps them in touch with the leading trio of clubs at the top of division two.

Two teams level on points and just short of the leading pack, this always had the makings of a close contest and so it proved.

The flow of the game was not helped by the pitch and blustery conditions and it was a real scrappy affair for a hour.

Nobody could get a foothold in the game or play any real penetrating football and chances where few and far between in the first hour.

Waldron went closest for the home side but his headedr went agonisingly wide.

A defensive mix-up brought the first goal, and unfortunately, it went Wirksworth’s way.

Hesitance at the back ended with Tipton slicing past his own goalkeeper for an own goal.

The game certainly needed a goal and this bought Ambergate to life.

A tactical change saw Tipton moved up front and also Welch brought into midfield.

The moves paid dividends as Tipton sent Stevenson clear and he made no mistake as he drilled his shot into the corner to level matters at 1-1.

It was the sixth game in a row Stevenson has found the net.

After the equaliser, it was all Ambergate and there only looked to be one winner.

The crucial winner came with ten minutes remaining and again Tipton was involved.

His shot was spilled by the visiting goalkeeper and Shaun Bestwick followed up to rifle the ball into the top corner for what proved to be the winning goal.

This Saturday, Ambergate are home again when Hilton Harriers visit Heage. Kick-off is 2pm.
