Belper U15 7pts Chesterfield U15 27pts

IN near perfect conditions Belpers progress was to be examined at a higher level. What Belper lack in size and physique is often matched by their wholeheartedness, spirit and discipline. Their coaching progress is monitored in terms of technique and tactics and not results.

Belper were always on the defensive in the first quarter, but they withstood the pressure and often used turnover ball to good effect. Chris Byard made several good runs against his opposite number.

Good running from Hyde also made ground but Belper suffered a reverse when a quick taken penalty saw Chesterfield run in an easy try. This saw Belper attack but despite good handling Belper failed to breach the oppositions 22-metre line on enough occassions. Chesterfield utilising their bigger forwards broke down Belpers right to score an unconverted try. Belper turned around at 12-0 down.

The second half saw Belper playing enterprising rugby but failed to break the gainline, successfully. Clark, Hyde and Byard made strong runs but were often isolated from support . Belper suffered in the second half from the pressure exerted by the opposition and tries were scored as the Belper backs were outflanked , lacking cover and the winger ran in two tries. Belpers reposte was a quick penalty which saw a try for Hyde and a conversion for Byard. Despite disruption tactics from the opposition the Belper players stuck to their task but lost 27-7.

As midseason approaches The coaches viewed the positives of teambuilding, and skills development as the major plusses, but tactical approach and some tackling techniques are areas to be worked on in the New Year.

The under 13s were beaten by Ilkeston , but the try by Niall Wheeler was the highlight of Belpers day.

This all happened on Farmers Market Day where Belper Senior and Junior clubs had stalls selling cakes and other merchandise. May I extend the Committees thanks to all those involved Nia, Sophie, Janet , Sue , Chris, Ed, and to the many helpers who erected the stalls. Yvonne and Nia would like to thank all the minis parents for volunteering to make all the cakes.

Alll the Minis and Juniors are wished a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, see you on January 6th .
