Orienteers find their way to first place to qualify for national final

Runners from Derwent Valley Orienteering Club (DVO), e, were jubilant last Sunday when their team won the qualifying round of the 2013 Compass Sport Cup, beating favourites South Yorkshire into second place.

The Compass Sport Cup, administered by the publication of the same name, is the premier inter-club orienteering competition in the United Kingdom.

Sunday’s heat was held at Fineshade Woods in Northamptonshire.

Club captain Liz Godfree was pleased at her team’s turnout and performance.

DVO fielded a strong team in all areas and was able to score significantly in each age group.

The final scores for the competition were:

Derwent Valley (representing Derbyshire) 2272, South Yorkshire 2250, Leicestershire 2187, West Anglia 2038, Nottinghamshire 1806, Norfolk 1296, South Midlands 682

Seven qualifying rounds were staged across the UK with one or two teams qualifying at each event.

Derwent Valley will now join these successful teams for the final, which will be held in October in the Forest of Dean.

Meanwhile, Derwent Valley Orienteers will be staging their own event on Crich Chase next Sunday.

The competition is open to all members and non-members. Meet at 10am at the Hurt Arms, Ambergate. For further details, visit www.dvo.org.uk or telephone 01629 734042.
