On Saturday the Belper Marlin junior squad travelled to Eckington to swim in the second round of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Junior League.

The squad, which consisted of 9-12-year-olds, went up against five other teams.

In a tightly-fought contest, Marlin swimmers came first in nine out of the 47 events and achieved 29 top three finishes.

A particular highlight was the girls’ 12-and-under 4x25m freestyle relay team of Georgina Holbird-Gale, Katy Dymond, Ailish Adams and Daisy Gardener who secured their first win as a team.

Individual first places went to Phoebe Barden, Casper Raynard, Danny Skinner, William Brookes ,Dom Shrimpling and Caitlin Oram and there were team victories in the boys’ 11/u freestyle race and both the boys’ and girls’ 12/u freestyle teams.

The nail-biting cannon had everyone on the edge of their seats as the Marlin swimmers narrowly missed out on top spot, however their hard work was rewarded as the team who finished first were then disqualified.

Marlin finished third overall which was a creditable performance, the team cheered on by vocal travelling supporters.
