The friendly, but fiercely, competitive Four Towns Gala was hosted by Belper Marlin Swimming Club over the weekend at Alfreton Leisure Centre.
This was a four-round competition between the local teams of Belper, Ashbourne, Dove Valley and Uttoxeter.
It was an eagerly anticipated clash of up and coming swimming talent within the area.
Some say that it was the new crop of young competitors that gave the Marlin team the edge, others stated that the parental support and the new banners that adorned the swimming pool walls were the magic that made the Marlins storm home the winners.
All teams were aware of the eagle-eyed judges that were watching takeovers during the relay events after the disqualifications of the previous meets.
With words of advice and encouragement and with the last few weeks of training under their belts, the hand-picked team of youngsters battled their way to victory.
All honours hung on the last race however – the cannon – where ten children, both boys and girls aged between 9 to 14, lined up in chronological order to plough down the pool.
With an almighty cheer, the stars from Belper clawed four points clear of their nearest rival and came home as worthy winners.
A spokesman for the club said: “It was a brilliant evening - with two more rounds to go it is all in Belper’s hands.
“Very much like the England football team - we know you can do it!”
