County League Division 2
Belper Meadows (7pts) 181-8 [46 overs] (D Whiteley 48, M Cox 38, N Horton 31*, S Wesson 4-26) lost to Tutbury (22pts) 185-7 [43 overs] (S Wesson 33, M Cox 5-61) by 3 wickets
BELPER Meadows first XI suffered a three-wicket home defeat against Tutbury firsts.
The visitors were sat in mid-table having struggled for consistency throughout the season and were the type of opponents which Meadows need to be able to get a result from to stand a chance of escaping the dreaded drop.
After the toss Meadows batted first, looking to put on a good total on a nice looking track with the hope they can bowl Tutbury out later in the day.
However, the top order of Belper batsmen faltered again leaving them at one stage at 54-6 thanks to some superb bowling from S Wesson who took figures of 4-26.
There was a mini revival with a much-needed partnership from keeper C Whiteley (48) and skipper M Cox (38) which helped the side to over a hundred.
Another good partnership was forged when N Horton (31 not out) came to the crease, he made sure his team didn’t get all out before playing some delightful drives to notch up 181 leaving Tutbury with a bit more work to do than they would have liked.
At the start of the Tutbury reply, Meadows started well.
Runs were hard to come by and wickets fell at regular intervals.
Only S Wesson (33) made any noticeable runs.
Meadows captain Coxcapped a good all-round performance with five wickets for 61 but this was all in vain as Tutbury reached the intended target of 182 to win the game with only two overs left.
It was a great effort from Meadows but much more is needed. The fight is really on and what better way to start than an away game at local derby rivals Ambergate this weekend to kick-start a come back to the season.
