An overcast Saturday morning produced muddy conditions for Belper’s second home fixture of 2014, as Ashfield, who were unbeaten in seven, came visiting.

With first team skipper Simon Carter sidelined with an injury, Bryan O’Gorman stepped up to lead the hungry Belper side.

Ashfield failed to convert a few of their early chances from the boot, leaving Belper to open the scoring.

Attacking play from Belper seemed lacklustre, with speed and flow dampened in poor conditions.

Even exchanges in the scrum saw a fairly forwards game, although the dynamism of Belper’s backline showed class.

Particular mention goes to the quick hands and looping run of Jack Hibberd, combining with a stylish out-the-back pass from Man of the Match Bryan O’Gorman to score a superb try.

Despite building a steady scoreline, Belper failed to hit top gear throughout the match, and missed out on the bonus point, with a late try ruled out due to a forward pass.

In the end, Belper won 24-11.

The four points earned take Belper one point away from fourth. Belper’s next fixture is on Saturday, at Worksop. Kick off is at 2.15pm.
