Young people have been attending a series of new basketball coaching sessions at Belper Leisure Centre.

The weekly sessions are held every Monday from 4pm to 5pm, for girls and boys aged 14 to 18.

The sessions are being led by level two England Basketball coach and Derby Trailblazers player Barish Salih, and it is hoped the sessions will lead to the development of a junior basketball club for Belper.

Derbyshire basketball development officer Lucy Willets said: “These new basketball sessions will be fun and friendly and will welcome players of all abilities.

“We hope to develop a Belper junior basketball club and play games against other junior teams.”

The sessions have been launched as there are currently no other junior basketball clubs or playing opportunities outside of school in the area.

Belper School PE teacher Steve Lawes said: “There is lots of enthusiasm for the sport among our students and this is a great opportunity to get something started for the long term benefit of the young people of Belper.”

Anyone coming along will get their first session free, and the cost is then just £1 per session.
