Belper Bicycle Club’s Bill Cotton has taken part in the LVRC Barton Wheelers midsummer road race and gained a great result.
This was on a course up in Barton-on-Humber. Clubmate Derrick Woodings unfortunately had to pull out through illness. The race was eight laps of a four-mile circuit and there were several attempts to break up the peloton.
It was on the last lap that Ken Corbett (Wakefield) broke away solo and just managed to hold off the rapidly closing bunch, which was led in by Gary Hill and Dave Holmes (Sheffield), Bill finishing 5th in this scramble but he gained first in the F category race.
Last weekend, the Belper trio of Derrick, Mike Allen and Bill were all competing in the British Cycling Masters National Track Championships down at the Newport Velodrome.
In the H-age category (ages 65 to 69) Mike won the 500m Time Trial, the Scratch race and was 2nd in the Pursuit. Bill was 2nd in the Points race and 3rd in the Scratch race in the same H group.
Derrick, seemingly back to full health, was busy collecting medals in his J age group (age 75-plus). He came third in the scratch race, third in the pursuit but won and retained his points race title again.
This weekend sees the annual Mark Storer Memorial 25-mile Time Trial takes place on the Etwall to Uttoxeter and return course.
