Four swimmers emerged as best of the best when the Belper Marlin club held their Summer Sprint Galas.
Joshua Horobin topped the senior boys’ roll of honour, while Jess Hancock was best senior girl, Samuel Brookes top junior boy and Caitlin Oram best junior girl. The races, staged at Alfreton Leisure Centre, were over 25m for youngsters aged under nine and 50m for the older swimmers. At the end of the last evening of competition, the individual winners went up against each other in a knockout clash-of-the-titans-style race-off. All those who made it to the final six deserved credit.
A week later, at Heanor Leisure Centre, it was the turn of the mini-Marlins to hold their own sprint races, covering a width of the pool, watched by proud parents. Some used floats, while others put into action the strokes they had been taught.
They included Jessica Tomlinson, Connie Booth, Scarlett Proctor, Catherine Ratcliffe, Cameron Flinders, Alice Lincoln, Charlie Griggs, Henry Booth, Kate Kelly, Francesca Jefferies, Lydia Norman, Joseph Kelly and Emma Jane Rantzen.
At the end of the gala, all the children received medals and took part in an Olympic-style parade around the pool, with smiles beaming from ear to ear.
