Magnificent Mayfield Institute were the toast of the annual presentation night of the Darley Dale and District Billiards League.

For they figured most prominently in the awards after taking the league title and the knockout cup and also providing the player with most wins -- Keith Gregory, who took 14 out of his 20 matches, ably assisted by partner John Heathcote.

Mayfield were crowned champions by just one point after a thrilling finale to the season. They won nine, drew two and lost nine of their 20 matches to pip runners-up Hartington Royal British Legion. In third spot, a further 18 points adrift, were Tansley Potters, while the rest of the six-team league was made up of Whitworth Institute, Belper Strutt Club and Wallash.

The event was held at Whitworth Institute, with the league’s sponsors, Elliot Carpets, welcomed as the main guests to an evening of prize-giving, live music and general camaraderie.

Among the other awards handed out was one for the highest break, which was won by Jim McCann, of Whitworth, who posted a superb effort of 118. The name of Tansley Potters’ Robert Lowe was also up in lights after he landed a notable double by taking both the singles and doubles championships, partnered in the latter by Ricki Slack.

Although the season was another resounding success, the league continues to be on the lookout for new teams, both for its billiards section and its snooker section. Any teams that might be interested are asked to contact secretary Ricki Slack on 07890 985830 as soon as possible. The 2016/17 campaign is likely to get under way in September.
