In their first Investec Women’s Hockey League game after the winter break, Belper completed the double over north-east visitors, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.

Having won 1-0 in the away fixture earlier in the season, Belper inflicted a 2-0 defeat this time on the side sitting bottom of the Women’s Conference North table.

They got off to the perfect start when Louisa Boddy converted a ninth-minute penalty corner that put them on the front foot for a first half that they dominated.

The second half was a much more even affair, but Belper extended their lead in the 45th minute when Lizzie Lamb reacted quickest in a goalmouth scramble to turn the ball into the net.

Marshalled by the busy Boddy, the hosts had to concentrate on defending for the rest of the match. But they survived a number of penalty corners to hold on to two valuable points that kept them seventh in the ten-team table.
