2012 has proved to be a busy and sucessful year for the members of Belper Bicycle Club.

The road season runs from early spring and ends in autumn, and it was the end of March when the all-powerful Belper BC veterans started making their mark, with Mike Allen winning the LVRC Solihull Circuit Race on the Tudor Grange Park circuit.

Mike also won his age category as these veteran riders not only compete to win events outright but also compete in their own age categories.

Mike went on to win the Minty’s Memorial Road Race at the beginning of May and again at the end of May in the Percy Stallard road race in the Malvern Hills near Worcester.

At the start of June Mike really was on form in the Lincoln Ridge Road Race, finishing no less than seven minutes ahead of everyone else.

June 29 –July 1 saw the BC National Masters Track Championships take place at the Wales National Velodrome. Both Mike Allen and Derrick Woodings were there to defend their titles came away with a fantastic three gold and two bronze medals for Belper Bicycle Club.

In this, Derrick won the 10k scratch race for his age group and came 3rd in the 10k points race. Mike picked up a third in the 10k scratch, won the 2km Pursuit race with a time of 2:34.3 and then went on not only to win the 15km Points race for his group but did so in unprecedented style at this level in a points race, taking all five sprints to gain maximum points (25) and went on to lap the field.

This gained Mike an extra 20 points, making a total tally of 45 points, an amount unheard of and certainly very rare.

On the V718 course in Hull. Mike was in time trial action in Team Swift’s 10 on the 4th July. He set a new club and North Mids age record (65+) over 10 miles with a time of 20:31.

July 6-7 saw the LVRC National Masters Track Championships, at the Newport Velodrome again. Derrick and Mike picked up a total of three golds, one silver and one bronze medals between them.

In this, Derrick finished first in the 2k pursuit, first in the 5k points race and third in the 10k scratch race.

Mike recorded an incredible 2:31.9 in the Pursuit race, just over one second short of a World Record for his age. Mike also went on to take Silver in the Scratch race.
