A NEW golf event to help support the future development of the sport in Derbyshire has proved an instant hit.

The inaugural Derbyshire Golf Day took place recently at Matlock Golf Club and raised more than £1,000.

More than 20 teams took part to help raise funds for future initiatives and projects to develop the game of golf in Derbyshire.

It is now hoped the golf day will become an annual event.

Matlock Golf Club supported Derbyshire Golf in running the competition and allowing them to use their golf course and facilities for the day.

The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and supported by various generous sponsors and golf clubs around Derbyshire including: Matlock Golf Club, Kedleston Golf Club, Ashbourne Golf Club, Cavendish Golf Club, Buxton High Peak Golf Club, Alfreton Golf Club, Tapton Park Golf Club, Sheffield International Venues, East Midlands Golf Academy, Bridgestone Golf, English Golf Union, Golf Foundation, Hutton & Mitchells Wine, Bondhay Golf Club, Glossop Golf Club and Chapel en le Frith Golf Club.

The winning team on the day were T Christer, M Upex, T Fowkes and P Halliwell from Shirland Golf Club with a winning score of 14 under par 126.

Derbyshire Golf Development Officer Nigel Furniss commented: “We are really appreciative of the support we received for this event from many sponsors, golf clubs and golf professionals around the county who donated prizes. Matlock Golf Club need a special mention as they generously allowed us to use their golf course for the event, which was prepared for the day to a very high standard which I know all the competitors enjoyed.

“Moving forward Derbyshire Golf wish to run this event annually and grow it to become a major fixture on the Derbyshire Golf calendar.”

The Derbyshire Golf Day is one of a number of projects aimed at increasing participation in golf run under the umbrella of the Derbyshire Golf Partnership.

This is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including the English Golf Union, The English Women’s Golf Association, the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Derbyshire the partnership is supported by the Derbyshire Ladies County Golf Association, the Derbyshire Union of Golf Clubs and the Derbyshire PGA.
